Top 10 Little Known Facts About Cellulite

Cellulite: a common condition in which your skin appears to be dimpled, usually around your hips and thighs.

It affects 96% of women all around the world, buts most people don’t even know what cellulite is, or what causes it.

If you or someone suffer from this non-medical condition, stay tuned!

1. Cellulite Isn’t Fat.

Most people have the misconception that cellulite is fat, however, cellulite appears when the collagen that binds fat to the skin stretch and tear, allowing fat to divide and tear in small pockets in the skin. This appears as bumps and dimples under the skin.

Cellulite is just the dimples and bumps that are seen when fat is divided into tiny pockets in the skin.

2. It’s More Common In Women Than It Is In Men.

How unfair is this? Women’s skin collagen is arranged in parallel rows, like pillars.

This pattern lends itself to the compartmentalization of fat, which makes cellulite visible, says Schulman. Men’s collagen, however, is arranged in an X-pattern.

This creates only very small fat compartments and doesn’t allow for dimpling of the skin.

Estrogen plays a role, causing women to carry their fat around the buttocks and thighs, but the main reason is that the bands connecting skin and muscle are a thicker “x” pattern in men compared to a vertical pattern on women’s bodies. For men, that pattern keeps fat in place so it doesn’t pucker.

3.Cellulite Worsens With Age.

As women age, their bodies produce less estrogen. Less estrogen means worse circulation,

which means that there is a decrease in new collagen production and the breakdown of older connective tissue.

4. Having Cellulite Doesn’t Dean That You Are Overweight.

If you have cellulite, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are overweight, though excessive weight will make cellulite more pronounced.

Cellulite is caused by the weakening of collagen in the skin and anyone can get it, overweight or skinny.

Losing weight will not make your Cellulite disappear: even when you slim down, the tissue is still stretched and damaged!

5.Exercise Can Reduce The Appearance Of Cellulite.

A regular exercise practice cannot cure cellulite, but in many cases it can reduce its appearance.

Cellulite occurs when connective fibers underneath the skin become weak or lose their elasticity, but stretching and strengthening those areas can help.

Yoga routines that target the butt and thighs always help to prevent the ”orange peel” appareance.

Some included exercises are:

  • Step-Ups: Step up
on a bench or fitness step, then step down with the same leg.
  • Lunges: Take one large step forward and lower your body so both of your knees form 90-degree angles, keeping your front knee over the ankle. Return to starting position.
  • Squats: Aim for 50 reps, keeping your weight in the heels and your back straight as you extend your hips down and back (like you’re sitting in a chair). Try to lower until your thighs are at parallel to the floor. Don’t let your knees extend past your toes.
  • Leg Press: For this one, you will need a gym. Step up in the Leg Press machine and do about
3 sets of 20 repetitions with as much weight as you can.

6.There Are 3 Types Of Cellulite.

”Adipose cellulite” is the firm cellulite, orange peel effect on loose skin, Oedematous cellulite is a soft form of the problem and is caused by water retention. And fibrotic cellulite is hard, compact cellulite with orange peel effect.

7. Sunlight Can Make The Appearance Of Cellulite Worse.

As if there weren’t enough reasons to use sun-screen, sunlight can make the appearance of cellulite much worse, besides the deterioration of skin cells.

Over-exposure to the harmful rays of the sun ”hurts” your collagen, which makes it a lot easier for fat deposits to make their way through the connective tissue under the skin and cause cellulite bumps.

8.There Is Food That Prevents Celullite

Believe or not, eating fruits and vegetables with high percentages of water, can really help you fight that orange peel look on your skin. That happens because food with high water content strenghten you connective tissues, which will prevent fat layers from dimpling through your skin.

Here are some examples of high water content that might help you on that:

  • Strawberries
